Investigation into Peacehaven mosque arson led by counter terrorism police
Two men charged have been charged as authorities work to determine motive behind Peacehaven fire.
Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) has taken the lead in investigating an arson attack at Peacehaven Mosque in Sussex, as investigators work to establish the motivation behind the offence.
The fire was deliberately started outside the mosque, located on Phyllis Avenue, on 4th October 2025.
Two men, 38-year-old Ricky Ryder from Richington Way in Seaford and 34-year-old Jack Slowey from Mayfield Avenue in Peacehaven, have been charged with arson with intent to endanger life. They are currently in custody and are due to appear before the Central Criminal Court on 14th November 2025.
In a further development, a 69-year-old man from Newhaven was arrested on 31st October in connection with the case. He has been released on bail until 30th January 2026 while investigations continue.
CTPSE is now overseeing the inquiry, working in close collaboration with Sussex Police and building on the efforts of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team.
Detective Chief Superintendent Claire Finlay, Head of CTPSE, acknowledged the local impact of the incident and assured the community of a thorough and continuing investigation:
“I appreciate the concern an incident of this nature has caused to those living locally. There has been a huge amount of work by the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team up until this point and also significant reassurance work carried out by officers within the community. We will continue to progress this investigation at pace.”
Superintendent Rachel Swinney of Sussex Police added:
“We continue to work closely with Counter Terrorism Policing South East as we recognise the impact this incident continues to have on the public.
“We have officers in place to support the community and they are ensuring any concerns are heard and acted upon. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those local people who have supported and assisted officers with this investigation.”
