Boy rescued after falling from Steyning ledge
Fire services rescued a boy who had fallen approximately four metres from a path and become trapped
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service rescued a boy who fell from a steep footpath in Steyning.
Emergency services were called to the rural location after reports that the boy had fallen approximately four metres from a path and become trapped among thick brambles at the bottom of a steep ledge on Monday (28 July).
Two fire engines and the service’s specialist Technical Rescue Unit were mobilised to the scene.
Firefighters used a two-line rope rescue system to reach the boy and safely bring him back up the slope.
Thankfully, the boy was rescued without serious injury.
The fire service is reminding walkers and visitors to remain vigilant around uneven paths, steep drops, and hidden hazards in rural areas.
“In an emergency, always call 999,” the service posted on social media following the rescue. “Using What3Words can help our crews to locate an incident quickly, especially in remote areas.”
With summer in full swing and many people heading out to enjoy the South Downs and surrounding countryside, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging the public to stay safe and take precautions while out in nature.
