Hundreds of West Sussex students have been told to self-isolate after a school reported two pupils had tested positive for the virus.

An initial case was reported at Steyning Grammar School on Tuesday, followed by a second on Wednesday.

In a statement, the school said it had made the decision to send all Year 10 pupils home from its campus at Shooting Field.

They will be required to self-isolate for 14 days, with home online lessons being prepared.

"We have notified staff, parents and students of two confirmed cases of Covid-19 at Steyning Grammar School Shooting Field campus in Year 10. Student and staff safety is of paramount importance to us and we have made the decision to send all of Year 10 home to self-isolate for 14 days. We have stringently followed government guidelines and are working closely with the Public Health Team.

"We know that parents may find this concerning but are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England. Parents have been informed of the current situation and provided with advice on how to support their child.

"The school remains open for all other years and students should continue to attend if they remain well."
