Special meeting over Sussex devolution plans taking place in Brighton
Councillors will debate the move to a combined, mayor-led authority this evening
A special meeting's taking place in Brighton tonight as plans for devolution progress in Sussex.
City councillors will debate proposals to move Sussex into a mayor-led, unitary authority in full at 6:30pm this evening.
The move will see the county's local councils ditched, and tonight's discussions are hoped to reflect the views of the community.
It comes ahead of a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, where members will consider which proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Despite already being it's own unitary authority, the council has been invited to submit its plans to help ensure changes happen in a way that'll best suit residents.
Speaking when government decided to prioritise devolution in Sussex, Council Leader Bella Sankey said: “This is an historic and exciting moment for our region. I am optimistic and ambitious about devolution because of the direct benefits I know it will bring to all communities in Sussex.
"It will mean that more money is directly invested in our area and that better transport, affordable housing and skills and job creation can be accelerated."
