Shoreham FC has made a host of eco-friendly changes across the club, and is calling on other sports clubs in Sussex to do the same.

The club has swapped out all its lightbulbs for LEDs, made its menu 50% vegan, brought in compostable water bottles as well as paying £50,000 to replace the floodlights at the ground.

The club is spending £50,000 to replace the ground's floodlights

Club owner Stuart Slaney says replacing the floodlights will reduce the club's light pollution by up to 70% and the changes don't stop there.

He said: "The groundsman Steve Boyle has asked why we can't use more electrical equipment rather than petrol. So a lot of the tractor equipment and the pitch maintenance equipment is being moved over the electric now.

"In February we're actually digging up half of the grass area at the back of the club house, and we're going to put a vegetable patch there.

"That will be used in the café and will help us reduce our carbon footprint as well."

It's not just the club's staff that are getting involved, fans are being called on to do their bit too.

Stuart continued: "We've built a bike park and are asking supporters to cycle here. If you cycle here and park up your bike you get a 10% reduction on your entry fee and that 10% goes towards our offset carbon footprint programme.

"We don't bang a drum but it's in the matchday programme. We're looking to contact more of our other clubs in the local area to ask them if they can reduce their carbon footprint, even if its changing from plastic glasses to compostable glasses and changing to LED lightbulbs."
