A Shoreham man is taking on a year of running challenges in support of two mental health charities.

It comes as Saturday (10 October) marks World Mental Health Day, with this year's focus on 'mental health for all'.

In the build-up to the day, Henry Ainsley - AKA The Bearded Runner - has been running 52 half marathons in 52 weeks to bring attention to mental health issues and suicide prevention.

The 49 year-old carpenter is already in his 39th week.

Henry is doing it to raise funds for mental health charities Andy's Man Club and MIND.

So far, he has raised over £2,700 of his £3,000 target.

Henry told Greatest Hits Radio West Sussex that he lost his brother, uncle and best friend to suicide, and nearly took his own life six years ago:

"I got to the very end and decided I need to do something.

"I was, at the time, obese and not doing any exercise.

"So I put on my pair of trainers and started training.

"I got myself fit, got myself healthy, started training people and people started following me just naturally.

"So I decided to take on 52 half marathons in 52 weeks for male suicide and PTSD and mental health awareness.

"I always use analogies and I always tell people 'when you're climbing a mountain you only see a mountain, but when you're stood on top the view is amazing'.

"That was the way I got myself out of the pit - I just kept climbing and I kept putting certain things in that would obviously make me not fall down this mountain."

Donations can be made online via Henry's JustGiving page.
