A plan for Gatwick Airport to use the emergency runway for routine use has been put forward.

For this to comply with safety standards the runway which is currently used as a “taxiway” would need to be moved by 12 meters.

The West Sussex airport's plan is part of a 30,000 page document, which states it would cost a total of ÂŁ2.2 billion and create 14,000 new jobs.

A decision on the planning application is expected by the end of 2024.

If approved, the new runway would be used for departures only.

Construction would then begin in 2025 and the runway being in operational use by the end of the decade.
