Rishi Sunak visits Newhaven
The chancellor was in town to check on the progress of the West Quay Fisheries
The Chancellor has been in Newhaven today (6 January 2022) to see how a near £13 million government investment is helping boost the local fishing industry.
Rishi Sunak met staff at West Quay Fisheries in Riverside North as he promoted the government's levelling up campaign, which aims to revitalise the area's fishing industry and create more jobs.
The fisheries received £12.7 million from the government's pot of £4.8 billion. The project, which is expected to be finished in 2024, will provide two new Fish Landing Stages for smaller boats and will help build a seafood processing centre featuring an auction room and marketplace.
Following his visit, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said: "We are completely committed to levelling up opportunity right across the UK, giving everyone, no matter where they live, the chance to succeed."
“It is fantastic to see this in action today in Newhaven, where our investment is set to rejuvenate the local fishing industry, create jobs and boost the local economy"
“It is vital that everyone who is eligible gets their booster jab as soon as they can. It’s the best way to protect their lives, as well as the lives and livelihoods of loved ones and those around them.”
Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of Lewes District Council, said:**_** “Our successful bid for levelling up funding is integral to our wider and long-term plans for Newhaven, whether that is support for the fishing industry and the town’s maritime heritage, creating employment opportunities, regenerating the town centre or building much needed new homes for local people._
“Together with the funding we have secured through the Future High Street Fund and Town Deal, I believe the developments we have planned will define Newhaven for generations to come.”
