Rescue teams save man cut off by tide at Selsey
He was found after trying to swim ashore
Rescue teams have helped to bring a man to safety after he was found trying to swim ashore after being cut off by the tide at Selsey.
Coastguard teams from Selsey and Littlehampton were called to the entrance of the Medmerry Nature Reserve at just after 3pm on Wednesday (December 6th).
The Selsey inshore lifeboat also attended the incident and was able to get the man safely and bring him ashore.
He was found to be OK and needed no medical assistance.
A spokesperson for the Selsey RNLI team said:
"The ILB entered the Reserve and quickly found the casualty on an island.
"The man had stripped off to his underwear in an attempt to cross the rising water but after entering the water decided to call the Coastguards who advised him to return to his dry clothes put them on and wait for rescue.
"He had been walking from Selsey to Wittering without realising the tide was coming in."
Selsey's coastguard team has issued the following list of safety advice:
Always check the tide times and heights and keep a look out for incoming tide. Use tide timetables or a tidal prediction app like AnyTide. Make sure you have enough time to return safely. If in doubt, seek local advice.
Always carry a means of calling for help on your person.
Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if you are in danger or you see someone else in danger of being cut off by the tide.
Tell someone else where you're going and when you'll be back. They can raise the alarm with the Coastguard by calling 999 if you’re overdue.
In an emergency out at sea, on the beach or along the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
