Powers to tackle anti-social behaviour in Worthing extended
Police will be able to confiscate alcohol
Measures to discourage anti-social drinking in Worthing town centre are being extended.
Police will now be able to confiscate alcohol for another three years if they believe drinking it will lead to anti-social behaviour.
Although no fines have had to be issued since the order was introduced in 2016, police say it acts as a deterrent and encourages people to behave more appropriately.
Officers have been told to gather data on how and when the powers are used over the next 12 months and to produce a report for the council.
Cllr Rosey Whorlow, Worthing’s Cabinet Member for Community Health and Wellbeing, said: “It’s easy to stereotype how certain groups of people will behave in the town centre, which could mean that we treat them differently from others without even realising it.
“These powers can be a useful tool to tackle antisocial behaviour but we have to make sure they are being used in the right way, and at the right times.”
