Plans to build new emergency accommodation in Worthing approved
The eleven flats would save the borough council around £120,000 per year
Worthing Borough Council’s planning committee has approved plans to build flats for temporary and emergency accommodation.
The application would save the authority around £120,000 per year.
It involves demolishing the Old Air Training Crops buildings in Victoria Road to make way for 11 new homes,
A report to the committee said: “The council often has to put families in need into bed and breakfasts and hotels, and sometimes has to find accommodation out of the area, often for long periods of time.
“This disrupts children in school and parents in jobs.
“By developing and owning their own stock, the council can better serve families in need of emergency housing with purpose built, quality accommodation and, as a further benefit, save around £120,000 a year on fees.”
The meeting heard there are 329 households currently in emergency accommodation, of which 71 are placed outside the town.
However, the block will be made up of seven one-bedroom flats and four two-bedroom flats, prompting concerns that they would be too small for families.
