Hundreds of affordable homes could be built in Hove to help ease a housing wait list, where thousands remain stuck.

Plans have been submitted for a mix of 306 shared ownership and council flats on the former Sackfield Road Trading Estate.

The homes are hoped to be energy efficient, to reduce energy costs for those living there.

Sarah Poulter, Regional Development Director – South at Hyde, who are developing the properties, said: “It’s harder than ever for people who work in Brighton & Hove to afford to live in the city, so we’re delighted that we’re one step closer to nearly doubling the number of affordable homes delivered by our highly successful partnership.”

Councillor Gill Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing at Brighton & Hove City Council, said there’s a “desperate” need for “more high quality, genuinely affordable homes in the city”:

“Homes for Brighton & Hove is a great example of partnership working, and has already allowed us to deliver 346 affordable homes for people in the city.

“It’s really exciting to see another great scheme moving forward.”

A consultation’s open until the 14th of July, while a final decision on the homes is expected in the Autumn.

If approved, construction will begin in 2026.
