A pilot and their passenger are in a serious condition after their light aircraft came down near Worthing.

It crashed into fields at Titch Hill between Steyning and Wiston shortly before 1.00pm on Friday.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: "Emergency services responded to reports that a light aircraft had crashed on open downland at Titch Hill.

"There were reported to be two men in the aircraft who received medical attention at the scene.

"They were taken by air ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and their conditions were initially assessed as serious.

"The Air Accident Investigation Branch been informed and will be attending the scene."

A spokesperson for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said: "An accident involving a light aircraft which occurred this afternoon near Steyning, West Sussex has been notified to the AAIB.

"An investigation has been launched and a team of inspectors and support staff have been deployed to the accident site to begin gathering evidence."
