Crowborough MP Nusrat Ghani has launched a petition against plans to house male asylum seekers there.

It's after plans were announced to place up to 600 people in the town's army training camp by early 2026, in a bid to cut backlog and reduce reliance on hotels.

In a statement, the MP said she was "furious" over the plans, and added that the site was previously "rejected outright" by Conservative government due to "difficulty in it being adapted" and "extra costs".

The Home Office has confirmed that the training camp will be "self-sufficient as possible", including it's own on-site medical centre.

It's also agreed to cover extra policing costs.

Ghani added that she will be "seeking clarity" on how a consultation might take place and who it would be led by.

"The Crowborough Training Camp has already been rejected as being wholly inappropriate.

"If you think Crowborough deserves better, please sign my petition."

Asylum seekers are expected to arrive in groups of up to 30 each day, but with no more than 90 per week.
