People in Sussex are being told to surrender weapons that are now illegal to own.

The Government launched a surrender scheme yesterday (10 December), which gives people three months (until 9 March) to hand in their weapons to police.

Lawful owners can claim compensation if the total value of the items is more than ÂŁ30.

The surrender scheme is part of the Government’s commitment to tackle serious violence and strengthen police powers to take action against it.

The list of weapons includes zombie knives, cyclone knives, knuckledusters, death star knives, flick knives, gravity knives, batons, disguised knives, push daggers and other offensive weapons.

It was already illegal to possess a knife or offensive weapon in public.

Where can items be surrendered in Sussex?

Items can be surrendered at designated front offices across Sussex:

West Sussex: Chichester Police Station, Worthing Police Station, Crawley Police Station

Brighton and Hove: Brighton John Street Police Station

East Sussex: Hastings Police Station, Eastbourne Customer Contact Point, Uckfield Police Station

There is guidance on the Government website on how to travel with and surrender weapons safely, the compensation form and compensation levels, as well as the full list of items covered.
