Police have arrested and charged three people after an attempt to steal £20,000 worth of mobile phones in Burgess Hill.

They were detained at the Tesco in Jane Murray Way last Wednesday, May 17, by a group of off-duty officers.

Staff and shoppers were also able to stop the trio leaving the store, although some people reported being assaulted during the incident.

Two men, aged 18 and 23, have appeared before Crawley Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted robbery.

They have been remanded in custody ahead of a hearing next month.

A 16-year-old boy has been released on conditional bail until June 16.
