People across the Southeast are being encouraged to nominate a local hero to be a batonbearer at this year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Nominations are now open for people to apply to take part in the baton relay, which will travel to every region in England before arriving at the Opening Ceremony on the 28th of July.

The criteria for a Batonbearer are someone who meets one or more of the following:

  • Is always willing to take on a challenge and has a unique and inspiring story
  • Has made a meaningful contribution to sport, education, the arts, culture, or charity
  • Is a figure of inspiration that positively challenges others to achieve their best
  • Has taken on a challenge or cause and made a positive impact within their community

Alan Robins, the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, said: "Being a Batonbearer is an opportunity to get involved in a festival of sport that is renowned for inspiring athletes to compete in the spirit of friendship and fair play"

“We have many inspiring people in our city who contribute positively to our communities and would thoroughly deserve to represent Brighton & Hove in this way."

This year's games will see up to 6,600 sports men and women from across 72 nations and territories compete.
