New link road opens in Billingshurst
It aims to reduce traffic going through the village centre
A new link road which is set to reduce traffic through Billingshurst village centre will open on Monday (December 14th).
The “Billingshurst spine road”, which is 1.1km long, will link the A272 with the A29 on the eastern side of the village.
It has been built by a consortium of developers - Devine Homes, Bellway Homes and Persimmon Homes - and is now part of the West Sussex highway network.
West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, Roger Elkins, said:
“This is a welcome addition to the highway network and I would like to thank the developers for providing this new infrastructure, which will no doubt reduce through traffic in Billingshurst village centre, help to improve air quality and enhance village life.”
County councillor for the Billingshurst division, Amanda Jupp, said:
“I welcome the opening of the new spine road.
“It will help reduce the volume of traffic through the village as well as enable road users to by-pass the village more efficiently if they are coming from the north on the A29 and proceeding eastwards on the A272 as it will take pressure away from the junction of East Street and the High Street.”
The spine road will be designated part of the A272. East Street, West Street and part of the High Street - that were part of the A272 - will be downgraded to C-class roads.
