A significant repair is being carried out by Southern Water to fix another burst sewer pipe in East Sussex.

The latest leak on Bulverhythe Road in St Leonards follows a week of disruption caused by a broken main in Rye, which left 5000 customers without running water.

In a statement written yesterday afternoon (Sunday 1st October), Southern Water said: "Unfortunately, this is a significant repair that will require more than 40 tankers, six nurse tanks and four hydraulic pumps to fix.

"We’re using sandbags and haybales to prevent any local flooding. We understand the concerns of local residents, but we’ll do everything we can to make sure customers’ homes or gardens are not impacted. We'll be contacting all customers in the area directly.

"We’re sorry that this will cause some disruption to customers and businesses in the area. Traffic management will be in place at Bulverhythe Road and it is likely that we’ll have tankers queuing at Galley Hill, with agreement from Hastings Borough Council."

The burst was discovered while carrying out riverbank improvement works as part of a wider £5 million project to reline sewers in the area.

The statement concluded: "We’re very sorry for the impact this is having, and rest assured we’re doing everything we can to fix the issue as soon as possible."
