More than 1,600 Covid-19 fines issued in Sussex

Sussex Police have issued more than 1,600 fines for coronavirus breaches since last March.

According to data from the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), 1,618 fixed penalty notices were issued between 27 March 2020 and Valentine's Day this year.

The total is the 13th highest among all forces across England, with London's Metropolitan Police handing out the most at 10,357.

Across England and Wales there were 68,952 issued in total.

The highest number of fines issued in Sussex was xx for breaches of 'number one and two restrictions' - which include not being asked to move on from a specificed area when instructed to by police, breaching travel restrictions by making non-essential journeys, and breaches of the 'rule of six' while meeting.

Two were handed out for gatherings of more than 30 people, nine for face covering breaches and nine for breaking international travel regulations such as failing to quarantine following a trip abroad.
