Messages of remembrance have been left in Beach House Park in Worthing this morning (27th of January) to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Around six million Jews died under Nazi persecution and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

Deputy Mayor of Worthing, Richard Nowak led the service.

He said: "The theme of today is 'One Day'. The idea of that is that one day hopefully we'll be able to look back and say that genocide is no more.

"When you think about what's going on in the world today, the persecution of the Uyghurs, what potentially is happening in Ukraine. The world is becoming very dangerous again.

Mr Nowak was the first to leave his remembrance message on the tree following the service, one which he described as "very personal".

He said: "One of my great aunts was persecuted during the war, she was interrogated by the Gestapo. She fortunately survived the war but many in Poland didn't."
