Two people have been injured and a man arrested following reports of 'gunshot fire' near Crawley College.

Staff and students have been evacuated from the building in College Road following the incident on Monday (April 26th).

Sussex Police said they received a number of calls to the scene at just after 3.10pm.

Sussex Police have said both of those hurt in the incident are being treated for minor injuries which are not gunshot wounds.

The man was detained at the scene.

A 'large police presence is at the scene and in the surrounding area, with nearby roads being shut.

The National Police Air Service (NPAS) has confirmed that a police helicopter from Redhill was called to the scene to support local officers during the incident.

Eyewitness reports also suggest an air ambulance has been to the area.

People are being asked to stay away from the area until further notice.

In a statement, Crawley College said it was 'not aware' of any serious injuries resulting from the incident.

The town's MP, Henry Smith, has commended the work of police officers and college staff in responding to the incident.
