A man has been detained in Worthing in connection with an attack on a woman, following a five-hour stand off with police.

Officers first received reports a woman had been assaulted at a flat in South Street in Tarring at around 10.02pm on Thursday night (April 29th).

They arrived at the scene to find the suspect had barricaded himself inside the property.

Specialist negotiators were sent to speak with the man, who later climbed onto the roof of the building.

Pictures show tiles and bricks from a chimney were thrown onto the ground below - there were no reports of injuries.

Following several hours of negotiations, during which officers were able to gain entry to the flay, the suspect climbed down from the roof of his own accord at around 3am on Friday (April 30th).

A 34-year-old man from Worthing was arrested on suspicion of committing grievous bodily harm, causing criminal damage and making threats to kill.

He remained in police custody as of Friday afternoon.

The victim, a 26-year-old woman from Worthing, sustained facial injuries which did not require hospital treatment.

Officers said she made her way to a place of safety and is assisting police with enquiries.

A section of South Street was temporarily closed to allow for debris to be cleared, and the scene was earlier today secured for forensic enquiries to be carried out.
