Man charged with modern slavery in West Sussex
Police searched an address in Kirdford where they found a man in his 60s who reported to be a victim of modern slavery
A man from North London has been charged with modern slavery and burglary offences in West Sussex.
Officers, acting on intelligence, searched an address in Scratching Lane, Kirdford, on June 9, where they found a man who reported to be a victim of modern slavery.
He was immediately taken to a safe space and protective measures are said to remain ongoing.
Ryan Cahill, of Dollis Valley Drive, Barnet, is accused of holding a person in slavery or servitude, multiple burglaries across West Sussex, being concerned in the production of cannabis and possession of a weapon designed or adapted for the discharged of a noxious liquid (ammonia).
The 29-year-old appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ where the case was adjourned until Lewes Crown Court on July 21.
He has been remanded in custody until then.
