Police have launched an investigation after the body of a man was discovered following a fire at a flat in Eastbourne.

Emergency services were called to the property in Seaside Road at just after 2am on Sunday (February 14th) following reports from neighbours.

Sussex Police said the blaze was confined to the flat and those living in neighbouring flats were safely evacuated.

Officers are treating the man's death as unexplained.

In a statement, a Sussex Police spokesperson said:

"The investigation is at an early stage and officers are working to understand the circumstances around this tragic death."

Officers are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in or round Cloister Court in Seaside Road last night or up till 2am on Sunday, or who has any other information, to contact the police.

They can do so online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Westdene.
