Police have arrested a man after a 'suspicious package' was discovered in Worthing.

Officers cordoned off Tarring Road after being called to an address at around 9am on Wednesday (June 8th).

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team was called to the scene and safely destroyed the package.

A 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and remained in custody as of Thursday morning.

The road in the area was closed as a precaution and reopened at about 10.10pm on Wednesday.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said:

“Officers have thanked residents for their patience during this incident and can expect to see an increased police presence while enquiries continue."
