The southbound M23 at Gatwick Airport will remain closed through much of Sunday (November 29th) following a lorry crash.

The vehicle went through the central reservation concrete barrier on the stretch between junctions 8 and 10 at 3.13am on Saturday.

All of the southbound lanes, and three of the northbound ones, were closed due to a diesel spill after the lorry's fuel tank split during the impact.

The barrier on the inside lane of the M23 northbound was also hit, and badly damaged.

Work to repair this barrier means part of the M23 will be shut for much of Sunday

Lanes one and two of the M23 southbound were reopened on Saturday afternoon, with a clean-up needed of the diesel spill, plus repair work to the barrier.

Lanes three and four remained closed as of Sunday morning due to the damaged barrier.

In a statement released on Saturday, a Highways England spokesperson said:

"A new safety barrier will be fitted tonight, and thus the M23 northbound will be closed until this is completed tomorrow evening.

"The awkward location of the incident limits a swifter repair due to the lack of available lanes."
