A group of scouts in Littlehampton are taking their Remembrance Sunday commemorations online today (8 November).

Services that were set to take place in towns and villages across West Sussex have been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown.

The 5th Littlehampton Sea Scout group would normally march at the town's event, which is not going ahead this year.

Instead, more than 60 children and leaders have taken part in a virtual video event, which will be broadcast today.

The group, based at Gordon Hall in Wick, has ex-servicemen amongst its leadership team, while some of the children still have parents who either were, or are, still in active service.

Kester Riley, Group Scout Leader at the 5th Littlehampton Sea Scouts, said:

"As another lockdown kicks in across the nation it is of utmost importance to still commemorate this day.

"It is only right to acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country and acknowledge our responsibility to work for the peace they fought hard to achieve.

"It's been a year like no other, when generations were separated by lockdown rules, yet brought together by the nation, from children painting rainbows to applauding key workers to Captain Sir Tom Moore raising money for the NHS.

"The 5th Littlehampton Sea Scouts will not let this day pass without acknowledgement, and this is another example of generations coming together in an act of remembrance."

People can join the group this morning (8 November) at 10.55am and watch them commemorate Remembrance Sunday.
