Lewes to Newhaven 50th anniversary raft race gets underway
The 7 mile journey takes place along the River Ouse
Budding sailors are battling the currents from Lewes to Newhaven today, in the town's fiftieth anniversary raft race.
Up to 30 participants are taking on the two hour route from Malling Recreation Ground to Newhaven's swing bridge in fancy dress to support the RNLI and Sussex Search and Rescue.
Meanwhile, spectators will douse them with buckets of water, flour and eggs, as they make their way along the River Ouse.
This year, the theme is '50', to commemorate the years that have passed since the tradition began in 1975.
Race Co-Ordinator Liam Jackson said that's "open to interpretation": "We've left the theme quite open by just saying 50s.
"We could have people dressed up as 1950s rock stars, given that the raft race originated in the 70s, we might have some 70s themed.
"I'm not sure what the raft crews are going to come up with this year, so I'm very much looking forward to it.
"We've even had music themes where people have had full drum kits on their rafts as they're going down the river."
He continued that his favourite part of the race is the "chaos":
"A tradition that is developed over the course of the the raft race is people tend to squirt water, throw flour and and eggs at the at the rafters as they progress down the river...
"It does add to the spectacle."
