Seven people were taken to hospital and three arrests were made at this year’s Lewes Bonfire, which drew approximately 40,000 attendees to the town on 5th November.

The large-scale event, known as one of the most elaborate and popular bonfire nights in the UK, required months of preparation and close co-ordination between local agencies and emergency services to ensure the safety of those attending.

Paramedics from St John Ambulance and South East Coast Ambulance Service provided medical treatment to approximately 82 individuals during the celebrations. Seven of those treated had to be taken to hospital.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service also responded to various minor incidents on the night. Further details of these will be shared on their official website in due course.

Sussex Police reported three arrests during the evening:

A 38-year-old man from Lewes was arrested on suspicion of battery. He has since been released from bail while investigations continue.

A 27-year-old man, also from Lewes, was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm and battery. He remains in custody as enquiries are ongoing.

A 16-year-old girl from Lewes was arrested for failing to comply with a dispersal order issued during the event. However, she was later de-arrested and taken home by officers.

Chief Superintendent Katy Woolford, who oversaw the multi-agency operation, said the night was a success in terms of safety and organisation despite the arrests and injuries.

“This year’s bonfire celebrations passed largely without significant incident, and on behalf of the multi-agency group I’d like to thank the community of Lewes for their continued support and co-operation," Woolford said.

“The planning for Lewes Bonfire begins almost immediately after the previous year’s event and involves extensive work from police, local authorities, emergency services, and transport partners. It’s a complex operation, but one that ensures everyone can enjoy this unique occasion safely.”
