Emergency services are currently at the scene of an incident in Littlehampton.

Firefighters from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire in the open off Ferry Road at around 12.20pm today (22 October).

Two fire engines from Littlehampton, as well as appliances from East Preston and Bognor Regis, attended the scene.

A spokesperson for the service told Greatest Hits Radio West Sussex that "upon arrival crews were faced with well-developed fire involving the contents of a small shipping container".

The spokesperson continued:

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using a jet, a hose reel and a fog nail.

"Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no further hotspots.

"Officers from Sussex Police are also in attendance.

"The incident has now been scaled back, and we now have just one appliance from Littlehampton and the crew from East Preston in attendance at the scene."

Police in Adur and Worthing also attended the scene, which has now been "cordoned off while investigations are carried out", according to officers.

They added they will provide more information "as soon as we are able to".

Anyone with information is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 535 of 22/10.
