Hailsham man jailed for sexual abuse of 11 year-old girl
It happened in 2022
A 74-year-old man has been jailed for sexually assaulting a child.
Peter Victor Streeter, 74, of Greenwich Road, Hailsham, was sentenced at Brighton Crown Court on Friday 7 November after being convicted of three offences relating to the sexual assault of a girl.
The offences were committed in September 2022, when the victim was 11.
After being sexually assaulted over her clothing, the victim told family members.
Streeter pleaded not guilty at the initial court hearings and it was only on day one of the trial which was scheduled to begin on 8 September, that he admitted the offences and pleaded guilty.
He was sentenced to 84 months’ imprisonment, reduced to 75 months for his early guilty plea. He was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years and will be subject of a lifetime Sex Offenders Register requirement.
The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Constable Tania Snashall, from Sussex Police’s Iris Team, said: “It is only down to the bravery of the young victim in this case speaking out, who was only 11 years old at the time, that the offending of this man came to light.
“The fact that Streeter chose to deny the offences until the day of trial speaks volumes of his inability to accept responsibility for what he had done. The victim and her family have remained supportive of this investigation throughout, despite the length of time it has taken to get to this point and at court, the Judge recognised the far-reaching effects that this offending has had on the victim.
“No sentence will ever be able to give the victim those childhood years back but I hope that this sentence allows her and her family to begin rebuilding their lives.”
