Eastbourne gym offering free self-defence classes to women
It follows the deaths of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa earlier this year
A gym in Eastbourne is offering free self-defence classes for women and teenage girls, in the wake of the high profile murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa.
Boss Gym will be putting on the sessions after teaming up with Georgij Rogolev, who is a grappling champion at English, British and European level and frequently fights above his weight class, meaning he knows how to defend himself against a bigger opponent.
Susie Volkes, co-owner of the gym, told us she didn't want there to be a financial barrier to women's safety.
She said: "We really thought self-defence should be widespread and it should be accessible to all women and teenage girls because these are potentially life-saving skills.
"In an ideal world, every woman should be able to walk down the street and walk anywhere with their headphones on, walk through the forest with their dogs without having to check behind them but the unfortunate situation is, and as we can see from the recent attacks is that isn't the case.
"The classes are for absolutely everyone, they don't have to have any experience with anything, they don't have to have any combat experience, gym experience, nothing!
"All you need is the willingness or want to come here to find out more and learn about these life-saving skills."
