Searches continue after two decommissioned grenades were discovered during a police investigation in Newhaven.

Police arrested a 54-year-old man from Newhaven on Wednesday evening (July 23) on suspicion of burglary. Following this, officers searched a property on Newfield Road linked to the man. During the search, items initially thought to be unexploded munitions were found.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended the scene, and a safety cordon was put in place. Nearby homes were evacuated while the items were assessed. After examination, the objects were confirmed to be decommissioned grenades.

The man has been released on conditional bail while inquiries continue. A police presence remains in the area as the investigation and further searches proceed.

Inspector Sarah Taylor from the Neighbourhood Policing Team said, "We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during the disruption. We also extend our gratitude to Lewes District Council for providing rest facilities for those temporarily displaced while assessments were carried out to ensure the items found posed no risk to the public."

She added, "Officers will remain in the area as part of the ongoing investigation and while further searches take place at the address."
