Fears that new flats could threaten Brighton's music venues
The proposed development on Queen's Road is near three of the city's live music venues
Music fans fear that venues on Queens Road could be under threat if a new development is approved.
Haysport Properties, listed in the name of architects Brooks Murray, have submitted an application to Brighton and Hove City Council to build flats on top of offices at 125 Queen's Road.
But their proximity to three venues - the Hope and Ruin, the Rossi Bar, and the Folklore Rooms at the Quadrant - have led to concerns that more noise complaints could be submitted by new residents.
Some campaigners believe the venues could be forced to close if too many complaints are received.
Pub and bar business Team Black Management have said the proposed development is "really worrying."
They say that the Council had agreed an 'agent of change' policy that ensures new developments next to live music venues take appropriate measures to prevent noise complaints being made.
The company added "it's great people are rallying around, and it shows how much people care about live music venues in the city."
Brighton Pavilion's MP, the Green Party's Caroline Lucas, has also expressed, urging the City Council to "ensure the importance of these venues are fully taken into consideration."
Brooks Murray director Stephanie Brooks, however, said that Haysport Properties were "well aware of the lively live music scene in the street", and "would not want to jeopardise those venues in any way."
She said there is "no conflict between the uses", adding none of the building's current residents have made noise complaints regarding live music.
Ms Brooks added that Brooks Murray were "very disappointed that there have been objections to the proposals which will provide decent flats in a highly sustainable location as part of a revamp, and regenerate the whole building including the shop fronts."
