A peaceful protest against the use of Crowborough Training Camp for asylum accommodation took place on Sunday, 25th January, and has now concluded without any arrests being made throughout the day.

Sussex Police had officers on duty to ensure the demonstration was conducted safely, lawfully, and with minimal disruption to the wider public.

While no arrests were made during Sunday’s event, police have confirmed that three individuals arrested on Saturday, a 36-year-old man and 62-year-old woman from Crowborough, along with a 54-year-old man from Newhaven, have all been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Chief Superintendent James Collis expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation during the protest.

“I would like to thank the public at the protest and affected by the protest for their patience and understanding throughout today as it ensures we are able to keep everyone safe,” Collis said.

He acknowledged local concerns about the use of the Crowborough Training Camp for asylum accommodation and confirmed that police presence in the area has been increased to offer reassurance and engagement to the community.

“This presence will continue over the coming weeks," Collis added.

“Any incidents will be responded to based on threat, harm and risk, in line with our existing processes for preventing crime and responding to calls for service across Sussex.”

Sussex Police stated that they are working closely with partners and urged residents to discuss any concerns with their neighbourhood officers, either in the street or at their local police station.

Responsibility for the site and its occupants lies with the Home Office, and police encouraged residents with specific concerns regarding the Crowborough Training Camp to contact the Home Office directly.
