The Conservative leader of East Sussex County Council has been challenged to state his public support for Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Labour’s Godfrey Daniel posed the question at a meeting on Tuesday (February 8).

Earlier in the meeting, the council had voted on its budget for the coming financial year, which opposition councillors (including Cllr Daniel) had abstained from voting on.

Cllr Daniel said: “In the wake of recent events, does the leader of the council fully support and have total confidence in the prime minister Boris Johnson.”

Cllr Glazier replied: “I’ll concentrate on running and getting the residents of East Sussex the services they need and making a positive decision to back a budget that provides better services for this council, as opposed to the opposition abstaining.

“Look up abstain, it means taking a negative approach to supporting the needs of the people of East Sussex.”

Cllr Daniel asked the council leader to confirm if his response meant he was refusing to give his support to Mr Johnson.

Cllr Glazier said: “If at the appropriate time I am asked by the prime minister how I feel, I will share that with him.”
