Controlled explosion carried out at West Sussex beach

A controlled explosion has been carried out at a beach in West Sussex.

Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team was paged to reports of ordnance at Medmerry Beach this morning (5 November).

They carried out a search of the beach and found the ordnance.

A cordon was put in place and the beach had to be closed.

Photographs were sent to the team's operations centre and passed to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD).

EOD ccarried out the controlled explosion and the beach was then reopened.

A post on the coastguard team's Facebook page read:

"Ordnance comes in all shapes and sizes and ordnance found on this beach has been found to be highly explosive, so please do not touch it and call the coastguard straight away."
