A fishing boat has been escorted back to shore by coastguards from Selsey following safety concerns.

The team was called to get eyes on a vessel spotted off Hillfield Road in the town at 4.15pm on Thursday (November 19th) following several 999 calls.

The four people on board were found not to be wearing lifejackets and had clothing which wasn't appropriate for the time of day they were out or the weather.

In addition, the boat they were in did not have navigation lights or a means with which to call for help.

Selsey Lifeboat was launched and when on scene spoke to the vessels occupants who were fishing and asked them where they had launched from.

After giving safety advice, crews escorted the team back to the dive ramp at East Beach.

A Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team spokesperson said:

“The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not. Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble.

"Please help us and our families stay safe. Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.”

In an emergency out at sea, on the beach or along the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
