Number of businesses in Hastings evacuated after bomb discovery

A number of businesses in Hastings have been evacuated after the discovery of an unexploded ordinance.

Police were called at 9.30am to the reports at Ashdown House on Thursday morning.

Officers put a cordon in place on the A21, Sedelscombe Road North but it is understood that the road is being reopened.

The nearby Sainsbury's and a retail park have been evacuated.

Residents nearby are being urged to stay in their homes while they wait for specialists from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to assess the situation.

In a statement, Sussex Police said: 'Police are responding to an unexploded ordnance at Ashdown House, Sedlescombe Road North, St Leonards, which was reported at around 9.30am this morning (9 May).

'Nearby homes and businesses have been evacuated and a cordon has been put in place as a precaution.

'Meanwhile specialists from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team have been called to safely remove the ordnance.

'We urge residents to avoid the area while this matter is dealt with.

'Officers have thanked the public for their patience.'
