A bus driver and a passenger have been injured after the vehicle they were on collided with a railway bridge in West Sussex on Tuesday morning (April 27th).

Police and other emergency services, including ambulance teams and fire crews, were called to the scene in Rocky Lane in Haywards Heath at 6.42am.

Pictures show the double-decker with its roof sheared off following the collision.

In a statement, Sussex Police said medical staff are treating the people affected.

The road is currently closed in both directions.

Mid Sussex Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Inspector Darren Taylor said:

“The team, along with our fire and ambulance colleagues, have had to attend Rocky Lane this morning as a Bus has misjudged the bridge and hit the bridge, damaging its top level.

"Please avoid the road at this stage."

Compass Travel, which runs buses in Mid Sussex, has said its services have been disrupted by the incident.

A spokesperson for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said:

"A woman was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital with a head injury.

"The driver of the bus was also assessed and treated but was discharged from our care at the scene."
