Brighton man on track for rollercoaster world record despite Storm Floris
He was originally trying to ride every rollercoaster in the UK
A man who was looking to break a world record by riding all 120 rollercoasters in the UK in 16 days was knocked back by Storm Floris, which shut down several theme parks due to strong winds and heavy rain. But Brighton's Dean Stokes, 36, may still be on for a world record.
Stokes started his record attempt at Flamingo Park in Hastings, but less than a third of the way through all the theme parks, the original task looked impossible.
He'd decided to put the missed rides behind him and carry on with his route, when Guinness World Records stepped in to say an alternative record was available - most rollercoasters ridden in a week. No one had attempted the record before, so Guinness World Record set him a target of 30.
On Friday, Stokes blew that out of the water, with 51.
Stokes said: "I think it's easily beatable.
"If you went to America I reckon there are people out there that could probably beat it.
"So that's my challenge to the coaster enthusiast community."
He's carrying on with his original route too - today he's on day 10, taking on Flamingo Land in North Yorkshire.
Guinness World Records (GWR) said: "We would like to wish Dean the best of luck in his exciting rollercoaster record attempt and look forward to receiving his application and evidence."
GWR define "rollercoaster" is defined as a ride which features a car which runs along a fixed linear track or rails, which includes so-called 'kiddie coasters'.
However, Stokes is only riding kiddie coasters if there are "thrill" and "extreme" coasters in the same theme park - otherwise, he says, the attempt would take him over a month.
Stokes said he doesn't have any concrete plans for future record attempts yet - but if he attempts another record, he'll probably try to take on Germany.
