Brighton and Hove are set to receive hundreds of new public electric vehicle charging points.

This comes after a £2.8 million government grant was awarded to the council.

Of the nearly 500 charging points already in the city, the council is estimating to save over 1800 tonnes of C02 in 2024.

Most of the charge points will be residential chargers which can charge vehicles overnight.

Chargers built near shopping centres and other amenities will be ‘rapid’, charging vehicles in 4-6 hours.

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport, Parking and Public Realm, said: “The dramatic increase in the number of public locations will help give residents confidence they can use a charging point close to where they live.

“Scaling up also offers new opportunities to introduce flexible and off-peak tariffs to make it cost effective for residents to charge their electric vehicles in the city.

“Providing clean, affordable and low carbon energy for transport is essential to achieve net zero in the city. We’re using the evidence presented in our energy study to increase the pace and provide the right infrastructure.”

Extra support for the scheme comes from the Local EV Infrastructure Fund which supports councils to make sure they can plan and deliver the charging points to their city.
