Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is in discussions with the club about extending his contract.

The 44-year-old Italian, who replaced Graham Potter on a four-year deal in September 2022, guided Albion to Europa League qualification last term.

De Zerbi feels it is an "honour" to be in charge of the Seagulls and would like to continue, subject to his ambition being matched by owner Tony Bloom.

"I feel very well in Brighton," he said ahead of Wednesday evening's Premier League home clash with Brentford.

"I have a great relationship with the players, with the club, with Tony, with Paul Barber (chief executive), with David Weir (technical director) and everybody who works in Brighton.

"Yes, we are speaking about the new contract but at the moment we are (only) speaking, it's not done yet."

De Zerbi's impressive work on the south coast has led to him being linked with a host of more illustrious clubs.

Asked if he would like to stay, the former Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk coach replied: "I usually work to be happy and to enjoy and I feel very good in Brighton.

"At the end we have to analyse the target. If the targets are the same as the club's, it's an honour for me working in Brighton.

"I don't try to reach the higher level.

"Most important for me is working seriously, with a good team, good players but anyway it's important for me to fix an important target."

Brighton, who sit eighth in the table, have won just one of their past eight top-flight games following Sunday's 3-2 loss at Chelsea.

De Zerbi concedes his side must quickly learn from the poor defensive errors which proved costly at Stamford Bridge but overall is relatively pleased with recent performances.

"We played a good game against a very, very good team," said De Zerbi, who last week led Albion into the Europa League knockout stages with victory over AEK Athens.

"I'm sorry for the result because the way we conceded three goals was very bad.

"We can't concede these goals in that way but we have to move on and to think on Brentford.

"I think we are playing well, we are doing something important in football, especially if we don't forget we are Brighton.

"We try to do our best but we can't manage the result."

Brighton continue to balance a lengthy injury list.

De Zerbi does not expect any of his sidelined stars to be ready to return for the midweek clash with the Bees, while captain Lewis Dunk and midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud remain suspended.
