Brighton to host official screening of Eurovision Song Contest
Liverpool is hosting Eurovision on Saturday May 13th
Brighton is among a number of places across the UK to host its own live event as Liverpool hosts the Eurovision Song Contest.
The city will stage an official screening of the grand final in Jubilee Square on Saturday 13th May, which will also screen the coronation of King Charles a week beforehand.
There'll also be a special programme of events to run alongside it.
The UK was last year's runner up but is hosting this year's event because winner Ukraine is not able to because of the ongoing conflict.
Martin Green CBE, BBC Managing Director of Eurovision Song Contest said:
"We’re thrilled to roll out Eurovision to more UK cities. So many people here are huge Eurovision fans and for those new to the Contest they will get to experience the joy of watching the Grand Final surrounded by thousands of others right there in their local city.”
Each city taking part will schedule their own programme of events with each releasing more details over the coming weeks.
Eurovision Minister Stuart Andrew said:
"Eurovision is a fantastic opportunity for us to come together through music and our big screens will create a party atmosphere where no one will sing alone.
This competition is not just about Liverpool but making sure we celebrate what unites us and showcasing our steadfast support for Ukraine. We are bringing the Eurovision Song Contest to people's doorsteps so we can all take part in this historic moment and enjoy the magic of Eurovision as one."
Brighton and Hove City Council's Executive Director of Economy, Environment & Culture, Donna Chisholm, said:
"May is a busy month for the city with the Brighton Festival, Fringe and The Great Escape all taking place as well as the coronation and Eurovision.
“Brighton & Hove is renowned for its community spirit, and we’re delighted to have won funding for a big screen.
“The event in Jubilee Square means there is dedicated space in the heart of the city for people to come together and mark the historic occasion.”
