Lewes pubs to get a big boost from Bonfire celebrations
The event is the biggest 5th of November celebration in the UK
Lewes' pubs are expected to get a huge boost, thanks to tomorrow's bonfire night.
Over thirty themed processions will take place across the town as tens of thousands descend on its streets.
Organisers of the event brag it's the biggest in the world, while Bryn Mabey from Lewes District Council told us it has a year-round impact:
"The rest of the town benefits for the rest of the year, just in terms of the reputation of the town - people want to come and see our lovely historic market town.
"omething we're doing this year is a scheme where people can bring their own plastic cups.
"It's not only nicer to drink a pint in something that's much more sturdy, but it also dramatically reduces the amount of waste our crews have to clean up at the end of the night, so it reduces the environmental impact."
Safety concerns
However, with such a big event carries safety concerns.
There are calls for people not to travel to the event over fears of overcrowding.
Sussex Police Chief Superintendent Howard Hodges said:
"We recognise that Lewes is a small town - it hasn't got the infrastructure and the logistics really to accommodate a significant amount of people coming into the town.
"We really want to encourage people to stay local. There are risks around crowd movement and crowd density, if that's unchecked."
