A man has been arrested after emergency services, including a bomb squad, were called to a report of a "suspicious package" in West Sussex, police said.

A cordon remained in place near The Brow, Burgess Hill, on Thursday evening while officers from an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded to the incident.

Emergency services including West Sussex Fire and Rescue also attended the scene.

A heavy police presence was captured in footage shared on social media, with five emergency vehicles seen along just one small stretch of road.

Crowds gathered to watch officers assess the situation and speak with people following the incident, with some crews staying at the scene for several hours.

The fire service said earlier in the afternoon that the surrounding roads would remain closed and urged people to avoid the area while investigations were taking place.

Sussex Police said: "A man has been arrested after a suspicious package was reported in The Brow, Burgess Hill, this afternoon.

"A cordon remains in place while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team assesses the situation."

The force later added: "We can now confirm the Explosive Ordnance Disposal has successfully destroyed the suspicious package found in The Brow, Burgess Hill, earlier today.

"Final searches are being carried before the cordon can be lifted. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
