Sussex Police don't believe his death is linked to migrant crossings

Police in Sussex have confirmed that a body of a man has been recovered from the English Channel.

He was found on Saturday afternoon (11th September) by a passing vessel and was brought to Eastbourne by the RNLI working with HM Coastguard.

Officers say enquiries are underway, with the body believed to be that of a man possibly in his 30s of 40s who had been in the water for several weeks.

They say there are currently no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a post mortem will be arranged.

The force added that there is also currently no evidence that his death is linked to migrant crossings.

In a statement, a Sussex Police spokesperson said:

"On Saturday afternoon, 11 September, the body of a man was found in the mid-English Channel, following a sighting by a passing vessel, and was brought to Eastbourne by the RNLI working with HM Coastguard.

"Police enquiries are under way and the body is believed to be that of a man possibly in his thirties or forties who had been in the water for several weeks.

"There are currently no suspicious circumstances and a postmortem will be arranged.

"There is currently no evidence that this death is linked to migrant crossings."
