Beach litter pick underway following Brighton Saturday Pride

There's "always a problem" with people leaving rubbish behind

The director of Brighton Pride's among those taking to the beach today to help clean up the rubbish left by yesterday's parade.

Organisers say even though they don't plan events on the beach - there's "always a problem" with people leaving rubbish behind.

But Ruby Stothard from diving group Sussex Underwater says it's troubling that that's even an issue:

"We're left with the remnants of what you'd expect thousands of people would leave on the beach.

"The past few weekends we've had a big stage filled with people. All of that brings lots of people and therefore a lot of litter on our seafront.

Ruby, who regularly litter picks in Ovingdean, says there should be better structures in place to ensure litter picking is not left to local people.

"It's a shame it's so much effort to get things back to how they were after these big events.

"I feel like there should be more accountability."

Among the headliners on day two of the annual festival are Mika and Gabrielle.
