Bank holiday strikes at Gatwick called off
A pay dispute between Unite, and two ground handler firms at the airport, have been resolved
Strikes that threatened to disrupt bank holiday travel at Gatwick Airport have been called off.
Ground handlers in the Unite union had originally planned to strike this weekend (26-27 August) as part of a pay dispute with their employers, Red Handling and Wilson James.
But the strikes have been called off after handlers at Red Handling accepted a 14% pay rise, and Wilson James a 16% salary increase.
Unite's General Secretary Sharon Graham described the above inflation pay deals as "a tremendous achievement."
"Unite has co-ordinated industrial disputes across Gatwick to secure well deserved pay increases for its members," Ms Graham added.
The union also confirmed they had no further industrial action planned at the airport.
A London Gatwick spokesperson said “we are pleased that the proposed strike action by airline ground handlers this weekend has been called off."
"We look forward to welcoming passengers departing on their summer holidays as normal.”
